The Visalia YMCA is hiring for various positions within itschildcare system!

All YMCA child care is family centered, involving parents and other family members as partners in the child care experience. 

Current openings include:

Assistant, Associate Teacher, Teacher, Master Teacher. 

Qualified applicants will be hired to assist the Site Supervisor in the planning, implementation, and overall management of the child care program.

Seminar Planned to Help Prevent Injuries Youth Sports

Kaweah Delta Health Care District will host a free Wellness & You seminar, “The Throwing Athlete: Injuries, Prevention, & Treatment” on Wednesday, May 15th, in Visalia.

The seminar will take place from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at Sequoia Regional Cancer Center, 4945 W. Cypress Ave.

The speaker will be Dr. Ian Duncan, an orthopedic surgeon in Visalia, who’s worked beside professional athletes such as Philadelphia Eagles Quarterback Michael Vick, former Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard and Philadelphia Flyers’ Scott Hartnell.

Scicon BBQ This Weekend!

The 53rd annual SCICON Barbecue and Wildflower Festival will be held Sunday, April 21. The event is an opportunity for families and individuals of all ages to tour and enjoy the SCICON campus. The festivities will begin at 11:00 a.m. and last until 4:00 p.m. The SCICON staff will be on hand to lead wildflower walks and nature hikes. The SCICON planetarium, observatory and museum of natural history will be open all day, and wildlife shows will be presented in the SCICON raptor center. Resource agencies, including Sequoia National Forest, Society of American Foresters, California Department of Forestry & Fire Protection (CalFire) and Tulare County Conservation Corps, will provide educational displays and activities. Children may participate in special activities, including building bird boxes and meeting “Smokey the Bear.” Entertainment will be continuous throughout the day and will include guitar ensembles, Ballet Folklorico, and local folk and country musicians.

Proteus is sponsoring the Inaugural William M. Maguy 5k Run/2k Walk.

The event planned for April 6th at 7 a.m. at Cutler Park.

Proteus, Inc. is a non-profit community-based organization with 45 years of experience serving economically disadvantaged residents in the Central Valley. We offer a range of programs which include adult basic and vocational education, employment-related services, child abuse prevention, family self-sufficiency, gang prevention, childcare and other services aimed at assisting individuals and families.

Proteus awards several scholarships to deserving students through a competitive application process. Scholarships range from $500 to $1,200 to deserving youth and adults.

National Park Visitors Pour $121 Million Into Local Economy

A new National Park Service (NPS) report for 2011 shows that the 1,573,393 visitors to Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks spent $121,892,000 in communities surrounding the park!

This spending supported 1,629 jobs in the local area.

The information on Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks is part of a peer-reviewed spending analysis of national park visitors across the country conducted by Michigan State University for the National Park Service.
