Slick Rock Student Film Festival This Saturday
The 10th annual Slick Rock Student Film Festival – Central California’s largest student film competition – is scheduled for Saturday, May 18 at the Fox Theatre in downtown Visalia. This year, the festival received 192 films, representing the work of over 380 students. The high school films receiving a “Premiere Cut” designation will be screened at the theater beginning at 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning. A screening schedule will available at www.SlickRockFestival.org on Thursday, May 16. At 5:30 p.m., students who played a central role in producing "Premiere Cut" films (along with their advisors) are eligible to participate in the Limo/Red Carpet Walk. The awards ceremony will begin at 7:00 p.m.

"Battle of the Books" Under Way in Tulare County

Tulare and Kings County middle and elementary school teams are scheduled to compete in the annual Battle of the Books event Today and May 22.

The middle school competition (open to students in grades 6-8) is scheduled for today. Together, Earlimart Middle School, Wilson Middle School (Exeter), Pixley Middle School, Waukena School (Tulare), Reagan Elementary School (Lindsay), Lakeside School (Hanford), Valley Life Charter School (Visalia), Alpaugh Middle School, George McCann Memorial Catholic School (Visalia) and Eleanor Roosevelt Community Learning Center (Visalia) are sending 20 teams and 116 students to the competition.

The upper elementary school competition (open to students in grades 4-6) is scheduled for Wednesday, May 22.

Senior Day in the Park

In celebration of the National Older Americans Month in May, the Kings/Tulare Area Agency on Aging is sponsoring “Senior Day in the Park,” as it has for the last 44 years, at Mooney Grove Park, to honor the seniors in our community. According to the Health & Human Services Department’s Administration on Aging, May is designated as a month to appreciate and celebrate the vitality and aspirations of older adults, as well as their contributions to our communities. Come join us for the 44th annual Senior Day in the Park.

Who: Tulare County Senior Citizens

What: Live music, food, and live entertainment including an Elvis impersonator, games, and exhibitor booths

When: Friday, May 17, 2013, 9 a.m.–2 p.m.

Celebrate National Older Americans Month at Mooney Grove Park this Friday!

The celebration of seniors in our community is sponsored by the Kings/Tulare Area Agency on Aging, and goes from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This will be the 44th year of the celebration.

According to the Health & Human Services Department’s Administration on Aging, May is designated as a month to appreciate and celebrate the vitality and aspirations of older adults, as well as their contributions to our communities.

There will also be an Elvis impersonator!

Kaweah Delta to Honor Top Docs and Nurses

As part of Kaweah Delta Health Care District’s nurse week celebration (May 6-12), Kaweah Delta will honor its top nurses and its physician of the year on Thursday, May 9, in Visalia.

 

The ceremony will begin at 7 p.m. at the Visalia Fox Theatre, 308 W. Main St. Those who be honored include:

 

Physician of the Year – Nadia Lupercio, M.D.

Nadia Lupercio, M.D., is an internal medicine physician at Kaweah Delta Medical Center. She is a graduate of Ross University and completed her residency at Albany Medical Center (Albany, New York). She is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine. She has been named Physician of the Year by Kaweah Delta Health Care District’s Professional Practice Council, which is made up of staff nurses representing every area of nursing in the district.

Free Nutrition Series at Lifestyle Center

Free Nutrition Series at Lifestyle Center

The Lifestyle Center, the only medically-based fitness facility in Visalia, will continue its free Nutrition & You series on Thursday, May 16, with a class on dining out healthier.

The Nutrition & You Class Series will take place from 6-7 p.m. and will be taught by Alana Unger, Registered Dietitian at The Lifestyle Center.

The Lifestyle Center, a division of Kaweah Delta Health Care District, is open from 4:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekdays and from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekends at 5105 W. Cypress Ave. in Visalia. Information: 624-3400 or visit TheLifestyleCenter.org.

This year, the 581-bed Kaweah Delta Health Care District is celebrating its 50th anniversary. It’s the only level III trauma center serving Tulare and Kings counties and offers comprehensive services including a well-respected pediatric hospitalist program, a nationally-recognized orthopedic program, cancer programs and more.

University Prep High School Wins Step-Up Youth Challenge

University Prep High School Wins Step-Up Youth Challenge

A team of students from University Preparatory High School (UPHS) won the “Best Overall” award in the high school portion of the annual Step Up Youth Challenge, which concluded April 25 with a red carpet awards ceremony at the Visalia Fox Theater. The UPHS students, along with teams from five other high schools and 13 middle schools, worked October through April to identify a community need and create a program to address that need.

UPHS students developed a multimedia teen pregnancy prevention program. The program, which was designed for middle school audiences, is performed on stage with a mix of video interviews with teen parents and short play vignettes. UPHS Language Arts teacher and project advisor Dr. Tara Williams said, “From my point of view, the students took a lot of initiative in putting the project together.
