Red Ribbons Spotlight Fight Against Drugs | Community Spirit
Title (Max 100 Charaters)
No community is safe from the possibility of drug abuse-- which makes it even more important to reach the youth.
Research shows drug use at age 12 doubles by age 14 from over three percent to seven percent; that number more than doubles by age 16 to 15 percent.
To combat drug abuse and raise awareness, the Tulare County Board of Supervisors proclaimed the week of October 23-31, 2011 Red Ribbon Week.
The proclamation calls on educators, business owners, and community organizations to promote drug-free lifestyles.
“Red Ribbon Week gives us the opportunity to be vocal and visible in our efforts to achieve a drug-free community,” said Michelle Reynoso, Prevention Program Supervisor. “Research shows that children are less likely to use alcohol and other drugs when parents and other role models are clear and consistent in their opposition to substance use and abuse.”
This year’s celebration includes the Red Ribbon Week Carnival in New London today, and the Red Ribbon Week Round Up at the McDermott Field House on Saturday, October 29th.
“Red Ribbon Week encourages our entire community to adopt healthy, drug-free lifestyles,” said Al Rodriguez, Prevention Practices Liaison. “All of us, parents, schools, businesses, and organizations can come together as we look for innovative ways to keep kids and our community drug free.”
United States Congress established Red Ribbon Week in 1988.
