Tulare County Kids Celebrate Arbor Day

Tulare County Kids Celebrate Arbor Day

The Tulare County Arbor Day Celebration is a hands-on student event provided annually for third-, fourth-, and fifth-grade students. Students learn about the importance of, and care for, trees in the environment. More than 500 students are expected to experience a variety of environmental lessons within Tulare County’s Mooney Grove Park on topics including seeds, insects, mulch and the water system. Local environmental experts from organizations such as SCICON and the University of California’s Master Gardeners conduct these fun-filled, activity-based lessons.

Additionally, students tour the County museum and learn about the rich agricultural history of our valley. They also plant a tree at Mooney Grove to help with the park’s restoration. Each student will not only learn how to plant trees properly, but will be given their very own tree seedling to take home and plant with their family.

Teachers also participate in the environmental lessons.

Leave Canned Food at Your Mailbox Today

Leave Canned Food at Your Mailbox Today

Today, Saturday, May 12, 2012, the National Association of Letter Carriers will pick up canned and dried foods for Stamp Out Hunger across America. Now in its 20th year, the Stamp Out Hunger effort is the nation’s largest single-day food drive.

In recent years, a record-setting total of 77 million pounds of food was donated, bringing the grand total of donations to more than one billion pounds collected over the history of the drive.

To help Stamp Out Hunger, simply leave a sturdy bag containing non-perishable food items next to your mailbox before regular mail delivery today, Saturday, May 12th. The nation’s 230,000 letter carriers will then collect the donations as they deliver the mail and take them to food banks and other hunger relief organizations in more than 10,000 local communities.
